Adventures in the Universe

August 17 @ 9:00 pm - 10:30 pm

$50

In celebration of the 150th birthday of composer Charles Ives, seven-time Grammy® winning saxophonist Paul Winter and his Consort will present their new musical journey, “Adventures in the Universe,” at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 17th in Woolsey Hall on the campus of Yale University, 500 College Street, New Haven, CT.

Paul Winter says, “I’m thrilled with the opportunity to play once again in this magnificent and historic forum, which from my experience has the most dynamic acoustics of any concert hall in America.”

Adventures in the Universe” is the Paul Winter Consort’s tribute to Charles Ives, inspired by Ives’s aural-vision of a “Universe Symphony,” an epic work he never realized in his lifetime but which he encouraged future musicians to explore. Winter says, “Our aspiration is to use the extraordinary acoustics of Woolsey Hall to create soundscapes which might awaken in the imaginations of listeners, and players, some inkling of a perspective of the vastness of the Universe, and, as well, to remind us of the uniqueness and preciousness of our planetary home, the Earth.”

Paul Winter’s Consort colleagues will include Brazilian pianist Henrique Eisenmann, Jeff Beal on flugelhorn (the larger, warmer-sounding trumpet), and the Consort’s long-time organist, Tim Brumfield.

“The renowned Woolsey Hall organ, with its 12,641 pipes, rivals in size the great Aeolian-Skinner organ of our home forum, New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where Tim was organist for many years,” Winter says. “However, being in a space considerably smaller than that of the world’s largest cathedral, the Woolsey organ embraces the audience with extraordinary power. It is the most glorious organ I’ve ever heard.”
